FACTORY EAR PLUGS
Fac X
December 1978
|
Description:
The First Christmas
present (doesn't even have a number)
December 1979
Red Plastic box with two
rubber ear-plugs sourced from industrial supply
firm in Gordon, Manchester. Small silver chain
is attached to the box.
Black and Silver crackback
sticker on front. Undesigned - bad type face.
120 were bought and
stickered
This box began the Factory
Xmas present tradition, together with metal and
lint breathing protector sourced from the same
industrial supplier in Gordon. Idea derived from
Peter Saville's original logo (Fac 1) for the
Factory club in Hulme - the "Use Hearing
Protection" warning symbol. The image was also
used on the backof Factory's first release, the
Factory Sample. The badly designed Xmas greeting
on the box was not done by Saville

Groove Notation:
Description: 7" debut single by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
Recorded at Cargo, Rochdale and mixed at Strawberry, Stockport by Martin
Hannett; Mastered by Porky Prime Cut, Portland Place, London.
Sleeve designed by Peter Saville.
Printed and hand folded and glued by Roberts and Sons Printers, Chapel Street,
Salford
Status Very rare in this original version.
Track originally recorded on "Henry", OMD's tape recorder. This release got
them noticed and then, after a mild bidding war between Phonogram and Virgin,
they moved to Dindisc/Virgin. As did Mr. Saville.
Peter's idea for this sleeve originated in a thermo graphic machine installed
in the Manchester Poly graphics Department at that time. Peter wanted to
experiment with using the same color thermo ink as the card it was printed on.
Originally offered the sleeve concept to A Certain Ratio in the bar of the Royal
Exchange Theatre, Manchester, who, arrogant little bastards, told him to get
lost. Instead he gave the idea to OMD, became their regular designer and won
countless awards for his work with them in the next few years.
Notes
from
www.omd.co.uk
Electricity
was one of the first songs that Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys wrote
together.
Almost had been inspired by The Teardrop Explodes' song Camera,
Camera which featured the line "I see a red car, I see a green car". The
phrase lodged in Andy's mind and he reworked the idea of traveling to
see a loved one by car.
There was some debate between the band and Tony Wilson (Factory
supremo) over which versions of the songs to include. Wilson favoured
Hannet's polished versions while Andy and Paul, not convinced by
Hannet's over-lush production, wanted the original versions. A
compromise was struck so that OMD's version of Electricity was included
with Hannet's take on Almost on the flipside.
5,000 copies were produced in a special 'black on black'
thermographed sleeve design.
The unusual graphics that feature on the
sleeve were partially inspired by Andy and
Paul's original musical notation style. Unable
to read or write music, they adapted a series of
symbols, each one representing different
instruments.
Although only 5,000 singles were produced, Electricity was not a
limited edition by choice. The difficult high temperature thermography
procedure required by the sleeve design managed to set the printers
equipment on fire several times. The printer finally despaired and
called a halt to the production run at 5,000 copies.
The run-out grooves on side one read "Before" and side two reads
"After".

400 made in maroon with a later 200 in black. F design was not in fact Factory's F but the
Fractured Music logo, Fractured Music being Joy Division's publishing arm.
From an original idea by Durutti Column guitarist Dave Rowbotham who, late one night in
Strawberry studios, suggested Factory do a badge "like a prefect's badge, you know,
enamel". Dave was later to die in a vicious axe murder that was
memorialized in the
Happy Mondays song, "Cowboy Dave."
